What Actions Should I Take To Become a Civilian Taps Volunteer?

As an individual:

  • Contact every veteran's organization, and/or Reservist Unit, in your area and let them know that you'd like to volunteer to play Taps for any upcoming military honors funerals where a Taps bugler is not available.

  • Contact every funeral home, or other similar community organization in your area.

  • You can also contact Bugles Across America to register as an individual live Taps bugler. That site will also educate you on some of the guidelines and protocol of performing Taps.

  • PLEASE tell them that you'll play for FREE, and if the funeral home wants to work with the family to provide a gratuity, then be clear that the gratuity is purely an OPTIONAL thing as far as you're concerned. A lot of families, veterans groups, and funeral professionals avoid asking for a live brass player because some "professionals" have been charging up to $200 per performance. That IS NOT the OperatonTaps approach.

  • Be respectful. Be professional.
